Cameroon

Background

Following the attack on N’Djamena in February 2008 groups of Chadians took refuge in Cameroon, particularly in Madana camp on the outskirts of Kousseri. MdM decided to deploy an emergency team to ensure that the refugees had access to healthcare and to set up a protection programme to monitor whether their human rights were being respected.

Emergency support for Chadian refugees

»ACTIVITIES
MdM’s main area of work was establishing a primary healthcare facility for refugees in Madana
camp. This facility provided general consultations, nursing care and treatment for the aftereffects of violence. It also dispensed essential medicines and made referrals to the district hospital. Medicines were provided to Kousseri hospital and to other health services in Chad and Cameroon. A protection component was introduced to the project to monitor whether refugees’ fundamental rights were being respected.
»OUTLOOK
When the refugees were transferred from Madana camp to the Maltan site the mandate for
ensuring access to healthcare for the refugees was given to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC). MdM decided, therefore, to close the medical  facility and end this programme.
