Eritrea

Background

The complex relationship between Ethiopia and Eritrea—due to the border dispute between the two countries and many years of food shortages—hinders all development work in this country, which is one of the poorest in the world. MdM is working on a mother and child health project to help support this vulnerable population.

Developing health projects for women and children

»ACTIVITIES
Because of many operational constraints, since 2007 MdM has been supporting the maternity unit and surgical unit in Afabet hospital and has been providing health education sessions for women in the town. The main work carried out in 2008 has been: mentoring surgical teams (mainly in relation to caesareans), mentoring and ongoing training for all health workers (including those working in the two peripheral health centres), ongoing training for women leading health education sessions, and improving epidemiological data collection.
»OUTLOOK
MdM would like to further develop the work carried out in 2008 and finish the refurbishment of the hospital (solar energy, maternity unit), improve access to healthcare for pregnant women who live far from health facilities (building ante-natal care units, providing means of transport), providing more support to three peripheral health centres and training nurses through the partnership established with the national nursing school.
