Guinea
Background
After civil unrest, the death of Lasana Conté (who had been president for 25 years), and the immediate seizure of power by a group of soldiers, hope is returning to Guinea. This hope is based on the way the new government will negotiate the transition to democracy, mindful of the conditions in which Guineans live. The deplorable conditions in prisons prompted MdM to
try to improve the detention conditions and health situation in Kindia’s central prison.
Improving health in prisons
»ACTIVITIES
The partnership between MdM and KAD (Kindianaise d’Assistance aux Détenus or Kindia Support for Prisoners) aims to improve the detention conditions in Kindia central prison. This involves improving the environment (hygiene, sanitation, refurbishment and maintenance of the premises) and to improve health by introducing medical consultations, supplying the pharmacy and providing food aid to those who are malnourished. The third aspect of the project concerns reintegration and includes education, literacy and income-generating activities.
»OUTLOOK
This technical, financial and moral support is provided with a view to KAD becoming completely independent. In the coming years, MdM will put more emphasis on supporting income-generating activities and fundraising, so that KAD can become increasingly autonomous.
