Kenya

Background

The post-election violence that took place in the Rift valley in January 2008 disrupted the Kenyan health system. MdM, in partnership with the local health authorities, provided primary healthcare to displaced persons, victims of violence and the local population, and helped revive existing health services which had been disrupted by the crisis.

Emergency medical aid for victims of violence

»ACTIVITIES
The project provides primary healthcare for the local population and the population displaced by the violence and living in camps. Six mobile clinics provided general medical and reproductive health consultations, as well as nutritional screening and health education sessions. We provided medicines and medical supplies to regional hospitals and a cholera kit was given to the Londiani health district hospital.
»OUTLOOK
This one-off intervention helped the existing health services, which had been badly disrupted by the crisis, to get up and running again. It also provided a reminder of the importance of non-discrimination in terms of access to healthcare. We have established a permanent office in Nairobi and this will enable us to monitor the geopolitical situation in this area.
