Kosovo

Background

Since it achieved independence in February 2008, Kosovo (still not officially recognised by every country in the international community) is struggling to build itself up. The economy is stagnant and unemployment affects a large part of the population, especially the young. Although ethnic violence seems to have calmed down, mental health problems and lack of health services affect the majority of a young population, which is why MdM is working on a medical and psychological support programme.

»ACTIVITIES
Since 2007, MdM has provided financial support to the Degjo Rinine project, led by the association Vita Kosova association, aimed at reducing the risks of mental health problems, addiction and infectious disease. This has been extended to many areas of the country with the support of the Ministry of Youth, taking over from the Ministry of Work. A youth listening point has also been set up. At the end of 2008, the complete and effective handover of the support programme was carried out.

»OUTLOOK
MdM’s support for the Degjo Rinine project ended at the end of December 2008. In 2009, MdM’s PACA regional delegation will investigate new possibilities for intervention.
