Lebanon
Background
The persistent instability in Lebanon gave way, in the month of May, to violent clashes between pro and anti government supporters, because of the lack of agreement on who to nominate president. In the end, General Michel Leimane was designated president with the agreement of both sides. The government that he has appointed has to stabilise the situation between now and the next elections in May 2009, although there is still sporadic trouble in the North and South.
Access to healthcare and fundamental rights for prisoners.
»ACTIVITIES
The action of MdM in the central prison of Roumieh and in the other Lebanese prisons has made it possible to follow the legal and medical progress of new migrant detainees. These activities, carried out in all prisons, not only saw an improvement in health facilities and health education for prisoners, but also provided information to everyone concerned (health workers, guards and inmates) regarding prisoners’ rights. Lobbying carried out by MdM—and help in setting up a network of different NGOs working with refugees, asylum seekers and migrants—resulted in the organisation of conferences on prison health in October 2008.
»OUTLOOK
The programme ended on 31st December 2008.
Mental healthcare for refugees.
»ACTIVITIES
In 2008, MdM launched a mental health programme in the Palestinian camps of Nahr El Bared and Beddawi in northern Lebanon. This programme enabled the training of workers in the UNRWA and Palestinian Red Crescent Society clinics in general psychology, psychopathology and psychopharmacology, so that they could identify and counsel patients (12 staff were trained). The programme also included psychological and psychiatric consultations and with follow-up home visits for hospitalised patients and their families. At the same time the programme disseminated information materials to destigmatise mental health problems, worked with local NGOs to organise awareness campaigns directed at the general population in the camps, and lobbied UNRWA to include mental health within primary health care.
»OUTLOOK
In 2009, MdM intends to consolidate the programme and help local associations to set up psychosocial activities for patients following psychological and psychiatric consultations, and for the adult population in general.
