Marocco
Background
Because it is so close to Europe, Morocco is a land of emigration and transit. Sub-saharan migrants waiting in the town of Rabat face difficult living conditions. Following on from a programme to improve access to healthcare and the establishment of a reception centre for migrants (in partnership with Caritas-Morocco), MdM is now working on HIV/STI prevention, the promotion of HIV testing and treatment for people living with HIV.
Improving access to healthcare for migrants
»ACTIVITIES
In partnership with the Association for the Fight Against AIDS (ALCS) the MdM project had
enabled the recruitment and training of a team of peer educators from within the migrant community and the opening of a facility specifically dedicated to migrants. This facility provides tests and HIV/STI consultations, social support to patients and referrals to Casablanca and Rabat hospitals for people who test positive. Further project activities include running health promotion sessions (including condom distribution) in places where migrants congregate and lobbying for better access to healthcare for HIVpositive
migrants.
»OUTLOOK
This project came to an end on 31 December 2008. The work has been taken over by ALCS.
