Mexiko
Background
For some years, the Mexican government has been faced with repeated popular uprisings and a resurgence in local self-governance by the indigenous communities. In terms of the economy, since 2004 Mexico has experienced rapid growth which had led many companies to establish a base in the country. Nevertheless, Mexico faces a problem with clandestine emigration to the United States. MdM’s work aims to promote the right to health for migrants and the indigenous population.
Promoting migrant health
»ACTIVITIES
MdM worked in Tijuana and Mexicali and one of the objectives was to facilitate access to healthcare for migrant populations. Health consultations have been offered to migrants who have been deported and who are not accommodated in our partners’ accommodation centres. Information and referral sessions, to help people access appropriate health services, are also organised.
MdM’s second migrant project aimed to prevent transmission of HIV/AIDS and sexually transmitted infections. The activities carried out include HIV screening for migrants attending and referral of HIV-positive cases to specialist services for treatment.
The programme’s third objective was to promote and encourage the respect of the right to health for the migrant populations on the northern border. To this end, an information campaign on access to healthcare was organised. A system for collecting epidemiological and social data concerning the migrants attending the project was implemented, and the results were disseminated to our partner organisations.
»OUTLOOK
The project ended on 31 October 2008.
Supporting the indigenous population’s right to health
»ACTIVITIES
MdM France has been working in Mexico since 1998. The current programme aims to improve the health of the indigenous population. With the communities’ support, MdM is striving to improve the health system management and train health promoters. More than 300 promoters look after their communities’ health. In addition, MdM France is raising awareness among health actors about access to healthcare for indigenous populations as well as respect for their dignity, culture and identity.
»OUTLOOK
an autonomous, appropriate health system. More specifically, our programme will aim to improve access to healthcare and prevention, and will help build capacity to manage a community-based, inter-cultural health system. In this way we will support the process of sustainable social, human and economic development.
