Moldova

Background

Moldova is one country where the drama of human trafficking is played out. Whilst the number of Moldovan victims is estimated at 57,000, only 2,000 of these have been helped by the International Organization for Migration. MdM is involved in the north of the country to help this group suffering from physical and psychological problems, and to prevent the occurrence of trafficking.

»ACTIVITIES
MdM is involved in the National System to tackle human trafficking, and has become the reference organisation in the northern region of Moldova. The programme raises awareness of human trafficking in this country in two ways: firstly in schools, working alongside children and vulnerable adolescents, and secondly, by organising a media campaign throughout the region. In order to identify actual and potential victims of human trafficking, MdM trains medical and socio-educational professionals, whilst two mobile teams provide psychological and medical-social consultations in rural areas. MdM also monitors the multidisciplinary care provided to victims with the aid of its network of national and local partners.

»OUTLOOK
In 2009, MdM will incorporate lobbying activities into the programme.
