Nicaragua

Background

Despite advances in the social sector, particularly with the introduction of free education and free healthcare, Nicaragua remains one of the poorest countries in Latin America. MdM’s work in this country targets cervical cancer—the leading cause of mortality in young women—and domestic violence, which constitutes one of the key problems in Nicaraguan society.

»ACTIVITIES
MdM has carried out screening and treatment for 80% of the women of childbearing age in this region. We have trained personnel to carry out smear tests and colposcopies, to treat lesions and to raiseawareness of this problem. To enable smears to be read, the programme has developed Ocotal cytology laboratory.

Caring for women and children affected by domestic or sexual violence

»ACTIVITIES
The first aspect of our programme concerns the creation of a network of local and national actors working on the issue of domestic and sexual violence. The second component of the project concerned multi-disciplinary care for victims, providingthem with integrated medical, psychological and social care, and with legal assistance when needed. These services were provided free-of-charge by the CAIMCA (Centro de Atencion Integral a la MujerCaribena) centre for people affected by domestic violence.

Raising awareness and training, particularly for health workers and institutional actors, was the final project objective.
»OUTLOOK
MdM has extended the project for a further year. The creation of a network and the involvement of 10 local actors will enable the work to be continued, in terms of the prevention and awareness-raisingwork as well as the holistic care for victims (medical, psychological, legal, social) through the domestic violence centre (CAIMCA).
