Niger
Background
Permanently weakened by chronic food and health crises, Niger is also facing strong demographic pressure, problems of inequality and a shortage of resources. In this context, MdM is developing two complementary types of intervention: supporting Keita district health system and a research-action project on the issues of nutrition and birth rates in Tahoua region.
Supporting the health system
»ACTIVITIES
The programme aims to support the district management team to develop a strategy and organise provision of care. It also provides help with referrals, refresher training in maternal health, ACT protocols for malaria, screening and integration of malnutrition in health centres and providing mentoring support in relation to medical care. A stock of medicines has been provided to help cover any lapses in the pharmaceutical supply chain, and support has been provided in relation to pharmacy management and arrangements for responding to meningitis or cholera epidemics. The project is also advocating for access to free healthcare for vulnerable groups.
»OUTLOOK
The project will continue in 2009 and will be expanded to new health centres in the same district. The lobbying for free healthcare will be strengthened at the national and international levels.
Treating malnutrition and providing family planning services
»ACTIVITIES
A first phase of research among the community in three districts of Tahoua region has enabled us to better understand relevant practices relating to nutrition and birth rates. Taking these research findings into account, tools for information, education and communication (IEC) activities have been developed on a range of topics. Community workers have been trained and are carrying out awareness-raising activities. Other key people, such as religious leaders, are also involved. Finally, health workers in the relevant districts receive specific training on both themes.
»OUTLOOK
The project is continuing in 2009. Apprenticeship schemes and nutritional rehabilitation will be set up in several dozen villages in the project districts. These will be led by the community workers.
