Palestina

Background

The intensification of the Israeli blockade on Gaza and the continuation of violence until operation “Cast Lead” started in December have characterised 2008. In this general context of impoverishment of the Palestinians—particularly linked to the construction of the Wall and the expansion of colonies—MdM has been working from bases established in Jerusalem, Nablus and Gaza to improve provision of primary and mental healthcare for the most vulnerable people.

Programme coordination and access to healthcare

»ACTIVITIES
The team in Jerusalem runs the day-to-day coordination and execution of the projects in Nablus, Gaza and Jerusalem. MdM’s support of the primary health care centres in Jerusalem governorate has been extended to nine health centres in 2008. This action enables the training of health workers, refurbishment of the health centres, health education and the supply of medicine and medical equipment.
»OUTLOOK
The programme will finish in January 2009.

Dealing with emergencies and primary health care

»ACTIVITIES
MdM’s programme in Gaza facilitates a training the trainers programme for Palestinian Red Crescent ambulance staff trainers in Gaza and Ramallah. It also includes organisation of training sessions for orthopaedic surgeons from three hospitals in the Gaza strip, and support for 15 Ministry of Health primary healthcare centres in the form of refurbishment, training for health workers and supply of medicines. A partnership set up with the Palestinian NGO PMRS has enabled health education activities to be developed.
»OUTLOOK
Continuation of the programme and extension of the primary health care activities, supporting the Ministry of Health; 25 centres will be covered in 2009. Development of the project to train orthopaedic surgeons.

Care for wounds that can’t be seen

»ACTIVITIES
MdM’s team is working on mental health to improve access to care for the population. These activities enabled a destigmatisation campaign among the Palestinian population, and therapeutic activities by way of literary cafes, listening posts or psychological consultations. At the same time these actions have laid the groundwork for the opening of medical-psychological community centres in Nablus and Jenin, in co-operation with the Ministry of Health and UNDP. MdM has set up a psycho-social programme aimed at children and communities in three villages on the outskirts of Nablus.
»OUTLOOK
To open centres in Nablus and Jenin and to set up a psycho-social programme coupled with a programme to raise awareness of psychological problems in primary healthcare centres in outlying villages.
