Rwanda

Background

Rwanda, still affected by the consequences of the 1994 genocide, when nearly one million Tutsis were killed, is rebuilding itself with a reconciliation and unity policy that is implemented through the setting up of Gacacas—a justice system inspired by Rwandan culture in relation to resolving conflict, but which the genocide survivors see as bringing back the trauma of 1994. MdM is working with a local organisation, IBUKA, which provides psychological support.

Medical and psychological support for genocide survivors

»ACTIVITIES
Founded by genocide survivors, IBUKA is an organisation which is piloting methods of joint
management with southern civil society organisations with a view to being able to carry out joint projects. The partnership project helps to provide medical and psychological support to genocide survivors involved in the Gacaca process (psychological support, help in overcoming trauma, developing social links). The activities include group therapy sessions in the Gacaca, along with technical and professional support in the mental health field (training, supporting the capitalisation process, professionalisation).
»OUTLOOK
Encouraged by the results of the pilot phase (2006-2008), MdM and IBUKA have outlined a second three-year phase (2009-2011). The aims are to extend the programme, disseminate the initiative, help to implement it elsewhere and support the institutional development of our partner.
