Background
Despite joining the EU in January 2007 and economic growth linked to the structural reforms of the 1990s, Romania is still affected by political instability. In this environment, certain social sectors such as child protection, suffer greatly. MdM supports the actions of associations and civil society in the fight against child abuse and cruelty towards children.
Protecting children
»ACTIVITIES
In the absence of specialist Romanian professionals working to prevent child abuse, MdM’s PACA regional delegation is supporting the monitoring and supervision of new child protection professionals through the Romanian association COPII. The activities include two components. Firstly, the continued training of professional childcare assistants and the organisation of support groups specific to these professionals who look after children less than one year old. Secondly, a scheme has been put in place to return children to their natural families, with the help of these childcare assistants and the Romanian child protection department.
»OUTLOOK
MdM, in partnership with the personnel from the DPC, hopes to carry out a ‘community’ study concentrating on the different reasons why children are abandoned. MdM will concentrate on the enlistment of all medico-social players, on identifying signs of distress in mothers and preventing them with moral support, so as to prevent abandonment. Finally, MdM will help COPII to comply with reforms in child protection, so that the association can achieve the status of training organisation.
