Background

Gamadji Sare is a rural community of 24,000 inhabitants located in Podor district in the north of the country (Saint-Louis region), 500km from Dakar. The habitat and the subsistence conditions are very poor. In this context, MdM is working to improve the health of the scattered rural population and to facilitate access to healthcare.

Supporting the health system

»ACTIVITIES
Médecins du Monde’s general objective is to help improve the health of the rural population over two years. Our work aims to strengthen the human and material resources required to be able to supervise the rural community’s cases de santé (health houses). To achieve this, we cover the salary of a travelling Senegalese nurse and providing medical equipment for a new health post and the cases de santé.

The second main area of work is to improve the skills of the health workers through the regular presence of the travelling nurse alongside the health workers and matrons (birth attendants). This enables both training and mentoring of these health workers.
»OUTLOOK
With this work we are trying to avoid any substitution of local activities. Instead, we are helping to improve the operation of the existing health system. We work in partnership with a Senegalese development association, ASRADEC, in Gamadji. This work should improve access to, and quality of, healthcare in this rural community.
