Somalia
Background
The conflict between the transitional government, supported by Ethiopian troops, and the different armed opposition movements intensified during 2008, further increasing the vulnerability of the population. According to the UN, more than 3.5 million people (including one million displaced persons) need emergency humanitarian aid today. At the same time, the number of security incidents targeting humanitarian staff has increased considerably and this, in turn, limits our access to the population.
Improving health services
»ACTIVITIES
The project supports two primary healthcare structures in the town. The activities include refurbishing and equipping the centres, recruiting and training staff. The programme also ensures supply of medicines and medical equipment, carries out epidemiological surveillance and supports treatment of infectious diseases, particularly cholera. These facilities offer a full package of services including: medical consultations (50% women, 30% children under five, 20% men), ante- and post-natal consultations, vaccinations and care during labour and delivery.
»OUTLOOK
Dependent on how the political and security situation evolves, MdM would like to extend its
activities to help the most vulnerable populations in Somalia. In particular, the focus is on improving obstetric care in Merka hospital, organising referrals for obstetric emergency cases, opening a third primary healthcare structure and supporting the six health posts in Merka district.
