Background
Despite relative stability and some economic growth, this East African country has not been able to build sufficient capacity in the health system to be able to offer comprehensive HIV/AIDS care or to contain the epidemic. The MdM project focuses on caring for HIV-positive people, and includes a component dealing with prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV.
Providing an HIV/AIDS service
»ACTIVITIES
MdM supports the provision of HIV treatment in three districts in Kagera region. In 2008, the number of health structures supported, providing care and HIV treatment to those who need it, rose from 4 to 12 resulting in a 57% increase in the number of project beneficiaries. At the end of 2008, 3,292 HIVpositive people were benefiting from treatment and, of these, 1,451 were receiving antiretroviral therapy. MdM is also working to prevent mother-to-child transmission of HIV in 65 health facilities. As part of the national policy, this work is now integrated into mother and child healthcare.
Finally, we support three districts by carrying out HIV prevention activities, destigmatisation campaigns and the introduction and monitoring of testing services.
»OUTLOOK
In 2009, MdM will continue to extend the activities to 16 health facilities. The focus will be on treating children living with HIV in order to improve access to care for this vulnerable group. To this end, specific centres for children will be opened and family support groups will be established. Finally, we will also work on improving testing services and referrals between mother-to-child transmission prevention services and HIV treatment services.
