Tschad
Background
Faced with a serious economic and political crisis, which was made worse by the May 2006 re-election of President Deby (in power for 17 years), Chad has also witnessed a growing flow of refugees and militia from Darfur. MdM - which has been working in Chad since 2001 - is trying to improve the health conditions for street children, whose situation is worsened by the lack of infrastructure, shortage of health workers and poor hygiene.
Improving the health of street children
»ACTIVITIES
Sixty-four local actors and 40 peer educators from within the street children community have been trained in HIV/AIDS prevention (in partnership with UNICEF Chad). The programme established educational sessions for 2,800 children as well as producing teaching aids, a list of 10,500 street children contacts in the context of access to healthcare and monitoring the access healthcare circuit for street children. Medical and welfare support (including a system of direct payments reliant on local funders) provided by our local partner CSSI (International Health Support Centre) enabled more than 2,524 children to access primary care.
»OUTLOOK
MdM continues to support CSSI, but plans to withdraw at the end of 2009. We continue to support local organisations to carry out micro-projects to help street children (training). This will involve technical support, with the local partners having demonstrated their commitment to financial control and project management.
