Vietnam

Background

Although HIV appeared relatively late in Vietnam at the beginning of the 1990s, and for a long time it remained confined to marginalised groups, the epidemic has today spread throughout Vietnamese society. In 2007, 293,000 people were infected with HIV, causing 15,000 deaths each year. It is estimated that there are more than 30,000 new cases each year and this growing number has prompted the government to designate HIV/AIDS as one of its health properties.

Caring for people living with HIV/AIDS

»ACTIVITIES
The activities which MdM has been developing since 2005 were continued during 2008. These included running mobile clinics (6,936 contacts with 2,664 people) and ensuring access to treatment for opportunistic infections and sexually transmitted infections. MdM also carried on with its needle exchange programme and distributed condoms, while the mobile teams continued to provide home-based care. Training was provided for health workers and social workers and community groups continued to promote incomegenerating activities.
»OUTLOOK
In 2009, MdM will continue with these programme activities.

Limiting the impact of HIV

»ACTIVITIES
During 2008 MdM continued the work that had been started. Centred around HIV testing and access to healthcare (including anti-retrovirals and treatment for opportunistic infections), the work is carried out by mobile teams and through home-based care reaching out to marginalised groups. In the clinics (which provide screening, diagnostic and care services) the healthcare workers treated HIV-positive patients and carried out prevention activities. Finally, MdM offered training in administration of antiretroviral therapy, in prevention and in diagnosis and treatment for illnesses linked to HIV. The programme in Ho Chi Minh City was extended to district 9, in a rural area.

»OUTLOOK
MdM will carry on with the programme in 2009 and plans to expand to new settings, including rehabilitation centres in Hanoi.
