Yemen

Background

In partnership with the Ministry of Health, MdM is working on strengthening the Yemeni health system. Held back by an extremely fragile political and social environment, Yemen remains the poorest country in the middle east. The country’s slow economic growth means that the vital needs of the population are only partially met. In this situation, the poorest are the first victims of a health system that covers only 58% of primary healthcare needs.

Improve primary healthcare

»ACTIVITIES
MdM has succeeded in equipping, supplying medicines to and refurbishing seven health units, as well as the Toor health centre laboratory. The organisation’s work has enabled much wider access to healthcare, made possible both by the organisation of training (40 people trained) which has benefited workers in the health units and health centres along with community health agents. The programme has also included prevention and awareness-raising activities in relation to health and hygiene problems.

»OUTLOOK
MdM will strive to expand the prevention and hygiene/health awareness work in partnership with community networks and Yemeni associations. A project with the medical and political authorities, working towards the identification of solutions to improve the health system and access to medicines, is also on the agenda.

First aid training

»ACTIVITIES
MdM has successfully completed a first aid training programme for medical workers and voluntary sector workers. Fifteen sessions enabled us to train 300 people, working respectively for the Ministry of Health, the civil defence, the Yemeni Red Cross, Woman Union and different local NGOs. At the end of each session, an emergency kit, intended to be part of a first response to needs across the governorate, was given to each participant. In addition, following the renewed conflict at Saada in July-August 2008, MdM has responded to the healthcare needs of 1,881 displaced people by setting up a mobile clinic.

»OUTLOOK
MdM will start a school health project in three districts of Saada and train volunteers identified in the initial first aid training programme, who showed an aptitude for teaching, to share their knowledge of basic first aid.
